Barry's 8 Track Repair
My extensive arsenal of test equipment, comprising only top
quality gear - with a definite passion for Hewlett Packard

When you've been into Electronics as long as I have, you eventually find out which brands of test equipment are
the most reliable, free of occasional problems and last the longest.  I've been a huge fan of HP for a good many
years.  Their equipment mysteriously stays in calibration and performs consistently much longer than other brands.

The drawback is that you really pay for the best stuff.  Some of the test gear in my shop costs over $10,000 new,
for a single box!  The good news is that you can still find this fine equipment gently used for a fraction of its original
cost.  In the case of Hewlett Packard, there is generally no sacrifice in performance with their used equipment.

At my day job, I have the extreme privilege of working with a former HP Engineer, and he confirms that their gear
is "overdesigned", with much emphasis on the highest quality and reliability.  For instance, if a design calls for a
1 watt resistor, they will use a 2 watter instead.  In addition, they conduct extensive component stress analysis and
design their equipment to operate continuously under worst-case conditions for maximum long term reliability.

Hewlett Packard have traditionally been THE leader in cutting-edge technology regarding their test equipment.
During the time that Carly Fiorina was CEO of HP, the company's direction appeared to lean more towards cost
control and market share, and she indeed was very successful in doing that.  But she was also instrumental in
changing the company's name to Agilent on their test equipment, thereby causing some harm to the HP name in
my book.  I think most technicians agree that technology is much more important than profit margin when you're
looking for the very best electronics available.  Given a choice, EVERYTHING I own would be Hewlett Packard.
