| WARNING! |
Unless recently replaced, roughly 80% of the foil splices on your tapes will BREAK upon the first few passes through your machine. Actually, it is usually not the foil itself, but the adhesive which has dried out and become brittle. Your tape makes a rather sharp turn just before it reaches the playback head, and this sharp turn is what causes the adhesive to separate away from the tape. In most cases, the foil splice will break BEFORE the tape reaches the playback head, which results in a harmless break in the tape and a sudden loss of sound. If you are lucky, both ends of the tape will be seen at the open end of the cartridge. If you're not so lucky, only one end of the tape is visible and the other end is inaccessible without opening the cartridge. In extreme cases, the splice will break AFTER the tape reaches the playback head. When this happens, the tape will continue to play as if nothing is wrong, but the loose end of the tape is being sucked into the machine, or wrapping around the capstan (the part the drives the tape movement). Finally, the tape will stop playing because the cartridge becomes too jammed up with loose tape and won't turn, OR the tape has wrapped around the capstan increasing its diameter, which results in the tape running at "chipmunk" speed. THIS CONDITION REQUIRES PROFESSIONAL SERVICE TO YOUR MACHINE ! Needless to say, this portion of your tape is likely ruined at this point and will need to be cut out. Many customers complain that their machine "eats tapes". However, it is the FOIL SPLICE on the tapes which is at fault, as long as your capstan has been kept clean by routine customer maintenance. If your capstan is gummy from a melted tape roller or covered with grease, then yes - it can suck the tape inside even if the tape is not broken. A better understanding (with pictures) can be seen on my Customer Maintenance Page |

| Please note that not every single tape in existence can be successfully repaired due to many factors. For instance, any tape exposed to magnetic fields (especially near speakers) may be partially or fully erased and not recoverable. Tapes can also become stretched due to heat (such as those left on the car seat on hot summer days), or have a damaged track from being stored flat (this compresses the lower portion of the tape from gravity and can ruin the music on Track 4. VERY IMPORTANT: Even though most 8 track tape holders are designed to hold tapes horizontally (flat), any type of magnetic tape should always be stored VERTICALLY (end label facing up) to avoid damage to the edges of the tape. This also applies to VCR and cassette tapes. |
